Letters

I wrote a letter yesterday

And sent it winging on its way

With words of love and hope and cheer

To one whose friendship I hold dear.

The day was bright, the skies were blue,

And joy came easily, 'tis true.

I wrote a letter yesterday;

I'm glad I sent it on its way.

Today I wrote another note.

But oh, what different things I wrote!

I'm sure I loved this friend as much

As any other friend, but such

Is human weakness; and I fear,

Since skies are dark, the day is drear,

Instead of joy my note holds pain;

I wish I had it back again.
